If a batch of firewood hasn’t been dried sufficiently, so theres too much moisture still within the logs, we put them back into the kiln for a bit longer baking. We load all of the logs back into the kiln, using our Toyota fork-lift, and make the logs for many hours longer, until they are dry enough to take to the customer.

We use our wood-burning stove as the sole way to heat our house, can you therefore deliver large quantities of firewood?

Yes, we can. We have a Ford Transit tipper and can place many logs on our vans. So, for example, sometimes a customer will want the whole tipper load of logs.

 

How do you ensure that all of your logs are ready for burning?

Before we deliver our logs to our customers, we will take a batch out of the kiln and use a moisture meter to check the water content of the logs.

If the logs still contain too much water, we use the forklift truck to return the batch to the kiln. We then seal the doors and bake the logs for even longer. This process ensures that when the logs are finally delivered to our customers, they have been drying for long enough to be burnt immediately.

Some companies do not do this or may not kiln dry the logs long enough. What then happens is that the logs shouldn’t be burned, but if they are, they will produce a lot of smoke, and it can sometimes take a very long time to ignite the logs because they are damp. The customer is left trying to get fire going, often using many firelighters.

What constitutes a log being low quality?

We have recently finished building our new log gasification biomass boiler

 

As our company expands, so does our capacity to dry and process logs on a weekly basis. Our business is rapidly expanding due to the expertise of Decland Taylor, and his pursuit to produce good quality firewood. As we expand we needed a larger gasification biomass boiler to be built. 

We very happy to announce that after a lot of hardwork, we have now successfully built our new gasification biomass boiler.

This is used in conjunction with our other gasification boiler, so we effectively have double the capacity that we can use to dry would every single week.

This is a fantastic quality firewood processor, it has a simple to use joystick control, so the operator can safely control log as it processes through the firewood processor. Its simple to use, yet it produces logs which are precisely cut timber.

Quality control

Just as any new car, wouldn’t roll off the production line, without first going through some stringent quality checks, well, neither does our firewood. What we mean by this is, every single batch of firewood, as it comes out of our kiln, it’s checked to see how high the moisture content is of the wood, we use moisture metres to check how high the moisture is within the wood.

If the moisture content is too high, then it simply gets put back into the kiln for baking for a bit longer.

This then at the end of the baking produces good quality, dry wood, that’s ready for burning as soon as its delivered to the customer. But also, you will often see the cracking on the side of the firewood, where the logs have started to crack because the firewood has been subject to such a high temperature, for a sustained period of time in our kiln, which is another sign that the wood is nice and dry and ready to burn.

This is what separates us from some other firewood companies, that is we bake our firewood for as long as the firewood needs to greatly reduce the moisture within the wood. Some companies, during periods where they are most busiest, lets say in the middle of winter, in

December, well the firewood company may be under great pressure to produce logs, so they may not bake the firewood for the correct length of time. Yet we never cut corners, we always produce quality logs.

 

Why don’t you sell seasoned logs?

Some companies do dry their timber in a barn, and this is in the belief that over time, the moisture will evaporate out of the wood and they will become seasoned ready for burning. The problem with this is, we live in such a wet, damp climate here in Great Britain, that the wood is constantly absorbing moisture, so we think a better way is to put the cut logs into a kiln, and to bake the logs.

If the wood is not dry enough, then we will simply bake the logs for a bit longer in our kiln, until when we put our moisture meter reads that the moisture is greatly reduced enough, ready for us to be able to sell the logs.
