Introduction

Firewood quality varies quite a lot; for example, some companies offer wood that is correctly dried, while others do not.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a business that can deliver logs to your home but aren’t sure which one to choose, this guide will help.

Quality logs vs wet wood

The first thing to consider is how dry the firewood is. Is it kiln-dried, seasoned, or has it just been cut from a tree that’s just been felled? If the timber is wet, it will burn with an excessive amount of smoke. It’s this smoke that clogs up the wood-burning stove, causes damage to the chimney lining, and also causes more pollution due to the amount of smoke and soot.

Therefore, the first thing that we would recommend is to choose a company that offers kiln-dried wood. Whether it’s hardwood or softwood, whether it’s ash, oak, or cedar, make sure that the firewood is dried.

There are two main types of processes used to dry firewood. Those two methods are kiln drying, which basically involves baking the firewood in a kiln; then there’s seasoning, which is leaving it out to dry naturally.

Large quantity

Also, you should look to obtain the best value for money by checking the quantity of firewood that is going to be delivered.

For example, some companies sell firewood in small net bags, whereas others may offer better value by purchasing say the ash logs loose and in a larger quantity.

Offers different types of timber

It’s important to choose a firewood supplier that offers you different types of logs. For example, some customers prefer oak, some prefer ash, some prefer say cedar wood.

Check availability before purchasing.

Before you click the “buy it now” button, we would highly recommend giving the company a ring to check how long you have to wait for delivery. The reason we say that is because sometimes during peak sales periods, such as the build-up to the Christmas holidays, you have to wait many weeks for delivery.

Kiln-dried

We would recommend choosing a firewood company that’s local to you and can supply quality kiln-dried wood. This means that the logs should have been placed inside a giant heated kiln. This then greatly reduces the moisture content of the logs.

Low-cost delivery or free

Some firewood companies offer free delivery; however, some charge a fee even for local delivery. Therefore, when choosing a local firewood delivery service, weigh up whether it’s better to choose a company that offers free delivery, or whether the company that adds a delivery charge on top means the logs actually become very expensive when comparing the two companies.
