Introduction

Ash is right up there in terms of the most popular type of firewood that homeowners want to burn within their log burners.

Yet, why is this type of firewood so popular?

In this article, we will explain why the vast majority of the firewood we now sell is ash and why it is perfectly suited for use as firewood.

We shall also explain why it’s important to purchase wood that’s sustainably sourced, as well as why we now only sell kiln-dried firewood.

What are the benefits of burning ash logs?

Ash burns at a very high temperature and has a longer burn time when compared with some other types of firewood.

On top of that, because it burns so hot, it leaves absolutely minimal ash within the wood burner’s tray after the fire has gone out.

Some types of firewood burn rather slowly and offer a really dull burn.

However, ash is the complete opposite once it has been kiln-dried.

Why is it important to ensure the ash logs are correctly dried?

Every year, people purchase firewood based the price of the logs alone. Sometimes, initially, it seems like a bargain to have large builders’ bags full of firewood delivered to the customer’s door at a very low price.

However, the firewood may have been cut only recently from trees that were felled say a few week back.

As a result, the resulting logs can still hold a lot of water. This retention of moisture means that the firewood is very hard to ignite, produces a lot of white smoke, and has a very dull burn.

This results in less heat being generated from the wood burning stove, plus you might end up with some very annoyed neighbours as well, because of the smoke bellowing from the chimney!

The reason we say annoyed neighbours is simple: wet wood can fill the air with thick white or grey smoke when wet logs are burnt.

Burning wet wood damages local air quality.

Wet wood also damages the wood-burning stove plus also the chimney as well.

You should avoid wet wood for these reasons.

Kiln-dried firewood may well be more expensive to buy; however, if it’s been correctly dried, it will offer much more heat and therefore offer much better value for money.

What makes ash firewood particularly good for burning within wood-burning stoves?

Ash is a type of firewood that burns very hot.

Therefore, it’s perfectly suited for burning in open fires or within your wood-burning stove.

Why do you sell kiln-dried ash and not seasoned ash?

We sell kiln-dried logs because we know exactly how long to bake the wood for within our kilns.

This then means our logs will have a very low moisture content. Then we use moisture meters to check the moisture of the logs before deliver to our customers.
