Introduction

Different types of firewood do burn differently. Therefore, it’s essential to understand what type of logs you are purchasing and how to improve the heat that’s generated from the logs you buy from your firewood supplier.

It often comes down to how logs have been seasoned or kiln-dried by the supplier. However, it is also about how the logs are stored once they’ve been through the kiln drying or seasoning process.

How to improve the efficiency of your firewood

Which wood species do you purchase?

Some Cardiff residents, have owned a log burner for an extended period of time, and often they know what types of logs they want to purchase from a local firewood company. For example, they may call us and say they want a type of hardwood delivered, such as a beach, ash or oak.

In our experience as retailers of quality logs in the U.K oak is a very popular type of firewood in the United Kingdom.
However, other types of hardwood, such as beach and ash, are also very popular.

Then you have your softwoods, such as pinewood and also spruce. These are, again, perfect types of wood. The only downside to using softwood to help heat your home, is that this type of wood can often burn much quicker, so softwood will usually need replenishing much faster.

Ask your log retailer about the moisture content of the wood

Your log supplier should go to great lengths to reduce the moisture content of the wood.
This is so that it burns hotter and also burns longer. The added benefit is that it’s much easier to ignite when the moisture content has been dramatically reduced.

Now, this needs to be kept in mind because a lot of people often get frustrated when buying logs that don’t ignite easily. However this is often because you may have purchased green wood, which should not be burnt.

However, kiln-dried wood or seasoned wood, where the moisture is greatly reduced, would be much easier to ignite with firelighters.
With eco-friendly firelighters or perhaps other types of firelighters that can be widely purchased from different retailers, good quality firewood, that’s been kiln dried should be very easy to ignite.

How can you improve the heat output of firewood?

The first thing you should do is make sure your firewood company is correctly kiln-drying the firewood.
It’s a bit like baking a cake in the oven, in that the logs must be baked for a sufficient amount of time.

This baking or kiln-drying process subjects the logs to tremendous amounts heat, allowing the moisture content to evaporate from the timber.

This, therefore, this allow the log to burn brighter, hotter, and longer once it’s been from the kiln drying process.

Now, there are some companies that might sell greenwood. They might state that it is kiln-dried, but it hasn’t been kiln-dried for long enough sometimes. What happens then is that the moisture content is still high. It will then produce an excessive amount of moisture, which will damage the chimney lining and the stove itself.

So do avoid purchasing green wood.
