Kiln-dried firewood
So, a common mistake that homeowners can make is to think that as long as the wood is cut to the correct size and not soaking wet, it’s good to burn.
This is not the case, and we shall explain why.
When trees are cut down, the timber can be very wet inside. This moisture doesn’t evaporate quickly; it’s actually held in the wood for a very long period of time.
There are only two main ways to reduce the moisture content of timber logs: correctly season the firewood for a long period. How long the wood needs to season depends on the time of the logs.
Then there’s kiln-drying, blasting the logs with hot air, forcing the moisture to evaporate.
What type of firewood do you sell?
We sell kiln-dried firewood. The reason for this is that we have built our own kiln, which allows us to quality-control the wood at our business premises.
If the logs are not dry enough, they will not be delivered.
Therefore, all of our logs undergo an extensive drying process, which involves placing them in metal cages and then in a giant kiln for a long period of time. We open the doors on the kiln, use a moisture meter to check the moisture content, and if it’s below a certain threshold, we can sell the wood.
If the moisture content of the logs is too high, we simply return them to the kiln and bake them for even longer.
Just like pasty placed in the oven, our logs emerge from the kiln hot and baked, and the moisture has gone.
Cracking of the wood
A sure-fire way of seeing that the logs have been subjected to a very high temperature for an extended period is that the logs will be cracked.
These deep cracks appear along the logs, showing that they have been baked for a long time in our ovens.
