Introduction
It’s fair to say that some homeowners that having a real fire to heat their homes during the winter months, sometimes do not know the difference between “seasoned blogs”, “kiln-dried firewood” and wood that might be deemed as wet wood.
For some people therefore they do not understand the differences can sometimes be vast, in terms of what the logs burn like.
Here at Forestry Firewood Ltd, we are a business that specialises in producing and delivering kiln-dried firewood across South Wales. We mainly deliver logs and our firewood throughout Newport as well as Cardiff within Wales.
Quality Logs delivered in Newport and Cardiff
It’s important to stress why our logs are a very high-quality, and that we believe that wet wood, that is sometimes sold by some suppliers, can sometimes be a total false economy, that’s unless you are willing to take the time to season it correctly.
Therefore, in short wet wood can simply produce a very dull burn sometimes, it doesn’t produce the same level of heat as if it was seasoned, and can also produce excessive amounts of soot.
So, therefore this is why we believe that “kiln-dried” wood is a better option for a lot of wood burning stove owners.
However, if you are willing to store, season and wait for the wet wood to correctly go through the seasoning process, which differs in terms of how long it takes depending on the logs that you have, then you may opt for that option.
For a lot of our customers, they don’t want large parts of their garden consumed by storing and seasoning logs throughout the summer.
Sometimes the garden may well be small, so what’s needed is logs to be delivered by us during the colder months, this way a homeowner hasn’t got to go through the hassle of seasoning logs themselves.
Why we believe wet wood can a false economy
Sometimes wet wood is sold in bulk and extremely cheaply, but sometimes this is because the person selling it needs to get rid of it quickly as they are more or less deeming it as waste.
For example a tree surgeon who hasn’t got the space back at a yard to season the wood, may cut a tree and sell it from the place where they have felled the tree.
Alternatively, you may even have homeowners selling wet wood, where they have cut a tree in their garden for example, if the woods not seasoned, and has a high moisture content, this is what we refer to as “wet wood”.
“However even if the wood seems cheap, you have to factor in the time it will take to season it, and also having to store it in an area for seasoning- not all homeowners will have the space to season wood”.
Not every homeowner in Wales for example will have the ample space to correctly season firewood, for example they may not have a garage, you also have a suitable outbuilding to allow ventilation to flow and dry the wood.
Why is kiln dried firewood now becoming more common?
What homeowners often want, is for the firewood to be delivered at around the time that they need to use it, and for them not to have to go through the inconvenience of seasoning it themselves, instead just have a product that’s “ready to burn”.
This is exactly what quality kiln dried firewood, supplied from a quality supplier, such as us can provide.
Why is it so important to check with my firewood supplier, how high the moisture content is within the logs?
Sometimes somebody who’s just purchased a brand new wood-burning stove, they may think that all logs that they purchase are ready to burn, however this is not the case, if the wood is wet, it is not ready for burning it should be seasoned first.
Therefore when you are purchasing wood, it’s important to ask your supplier, what is the moisture content within the wood?
They should therefore have an accurate “moisture meter”, which can be applied to the wood, to see how wet the wood is. If it is wet then it is not worth buying, unless you want to season it.
You should also ask your firewood company how you wood is stored after it has been kiln-dried
It’s all well and good having a brilliant kiln that’s built specifically for the task of drying wood, but it’s also equally as important to make sure that the timber is correctly stored afterwards.
For example, if it is allowed to become damp and to absorb the atmospheric moisture back into the wood, that’s because it is stored say outdoors, or it simply isn’t stored correctly, then the wood can also become wet, and then it can produce a dull burn.
If you are therefore purchasing firewood, we would recommend visiting the facility, to make sure that it is being stored correctly.
Quality kiln dried timber has the following advantages:
Now we are going to talk about the many advantages of purchasing our firewood, which we believe is a very high quality product.
Bright burn
Our firewood will produce a bright burn, as opposed to wet wood, which can be extremely difficult to light, will require massive amount of fire lighters and may not produce the burn that you wanted.
Ours logs are different they produce a bright burn.
Can result in cleaner glass
Wet wood can cause excessive amounts of soot, and also smoke, this can build up in the chimney lining, it can also sometimes stain the glass excessively.
Our firewood, because it’s been kiln-dried, it can burn bright, and therefore doesn’t produce the same amount of smoke as wet wood does.
Fine ash
If a fire is burning correctly, and hot, then it should produce a nice fine ash within the tray of the wood burner.
Greater heat
The whole purpose of a wood-burning stove is to produce heat, therefore if the wood is wet then amount of heat produced might be rather disappointing.
On the other hand, if the logs have been correctly seasoned or kiln-dried, they should then burn bright, they should burn hot.
We therefore deliver a very high-quality firewood product throughout South Wales
