Introduction

If you’re looking for a new firewood supplier, you are most likely on Google asking the question “firewood near me.

This can mean that you’re presented with a vast number of local log suppliers to choose from.

The sheer number of companies to choose from can therefore be overwhelming. As a highly experienced business supplying quality kiln-dried firewood, we thought it would be a good idea to outline some areas you should consider when choosing a local company.

How dry is the wood?

When selecting a firewood supplier, we recommend that your top consideration is how dry the wood actually is.

If the wood is wet, which is often the case when the tree has just been felled, it can mean the wood takes a very long time to season.

Then there’s kiln-dried firewood: basically, the timber is blasted with intense heat in a massive kiln. Just as you heat your pizza in an oven, so too do firewood suppliers bake kiln-dried firewood.

The purpose of baking or kiln-drying firewood is simple: to reduce its moisture content. To subject the wood to such intense heat that the moisture evaporates and is removed from the wood.

However, some firewood companies do an excellent job of removing moisture from their logs; others do not.
Some companies, on the other hand, do not do a good job, which means the firewood is not kiln-dried or baked long enough.

What, therefore, happens is that the moisture is still within the log, meaning that because of the amount of water saturation, the logs shouldn’t be burnt.

However, if the firewood that has been correctly seasoned or kiln-dried is burnt, it can damage the chimney.

Damage to the chimney, the chimney lining and the stove itself can occur when there’s too much soot and smoke produced from burning wet wood.

Also, wet wood, or wood that hasn’t been seasoned, is simply a total waste of time.

It’s a waste of time, simply because it will create a dull burn, which means nowhere near the same amount of heat will be emitted from the stove if kiln-dried firewood were used instead.

What’s the delivery charge to deliver the firewood?

Do check with the log supplier to confirm their delivery charge. Some companies offer free delivery included in the cost of the logs, while others offer cheap firewood, yet the delivery charge can be pretty high.

How long have you got to wait for the delivery of the logs?

For some companies, during, say, the frigid weeks in December, well, there could be over a month’s wait for delivery of firewood.
Therefore, do check with the log supplier to confirm when they can deliver before you send payment for the “buy it now” button on their website.

The reason is that the follow-up e-mail could mean the next delivery could be a long way off.

What type of firewood is going to be delivered- will be Ash, Oak or Beech?

Also, consider the firewood you’re purchasing. Are you buying hardwood or softwood? We recommend the best types of firewood are kiln-dried ash, oak and beech.

Does the company use a moisture meter to check the timber’s moisture levels before it’s delivered?

If logs have been stored outside for an extended period, they can reabsorb moisture. For example, logs that have been put in the kiln-dried oven could be ready to burn straightaway.

However, if those same logs have been stored outside, let’s say for a few months when the weather has been very wet, the timber can reabsorb that moisture.

Therefore, your reputable firewood suppliers should conduct a moisture check on the firewood before delivery.

This means sampling each timber delivery to ensure the moisture level is low enough for the wood to be ready to burn.

How our company can help:

We are an established firewood business and have been delivering high-quality firewood for many years.

If you would like to arrange delivery of our firewood, why not give us a ring?

At Christmas, many homeowners in the U.K. like to have a real fire. A real fire creates a great atmosphere, and it’s also a very economical way to heat your home when you purchase the right firewood from the right supplier.

Which firewood is best to burn at Christmas?

We would recommend that, whichever firewood you buy, you ensure it has been correctly kiln-dried for an extended period. After that, the firewood also needs to be stored correctly, otherwise it’s possible for the timber to absorb water again.

Therefore, it’s an excellent idea to buy your firewood from a local supplier who ensures the wood is not only kiln-dried but also stored in a dry, well-ventilated location afterwards.

This is why at Christmas time in Cardiff and also Newport, it’s our busiest time of year, not just because the weather is colder outside, but because people want high-quality wood to be burning over the festive period, whether that’s at a local Bistro pub, or perhaps your living room, as you watch a festive film.

Ash, Oak and Beech

The vast majority of our customers ask us to deliver either ash, oak or beech. Each is fantastic for burning in a wood-burning stove over Christmas.

Oak

Oak is very dense type of wood, is burns slowly but it burns for a very long period of time.

Ash
Ash wood burns with a very intense level of heat, the ambers also can glow for a long period of time

Beech
Beech wood offers an exceptional level of heat, a lot of people also like it because it’s a type of wood that can be split with an axe very easily. Therefore if you want to make your own kindling, we would recommend using kiln-dried beech.

What exactly is kiln-dried firewood?

Kiln-dried firewood is simply timber, mostly logs that are placed in a giant kiln. The wood is subjected to intense heat, not just for a few hours; sometimes the baking process can last for many days. The wood then dries, sometimes even splits, and is baked to a level where it emerges with much less moisture content. This means the wood is less saturated with water and, therefore, more suitable for burning and use as a solid fuel.

Would you recommend burning seasoned firewood or kiln-dried firewood over Christmas?

Both types of firewood, whether seasoned or kiln-dried, can deliver excellent heat if properly dried. However, people often select kiln-dried firewood because, if the firewood producers have a set period to dry the wood, they can usually control how dry it is in each batch.

This allows for consistency in quality, as the firewood producer has a set time to dry, for example, different types of firewood such as oak, ash, and pine. Other types of firewood require different drying times. This depends on the wood’s density; for example, is it hardwood or softwood?

Can you deliver now before Christmas?

We would encourage you to place an order with us as soon as possible. Our delivery trucks are out working extended hours over the

Christmas period to ensure that we can deliver throughout South Wales.

However, during the build-up to Christmas, it is our busiest time of the year, so please try to book with us as soon as possible. If not, we can

It’s at this time of year that many homeowners are afraid to find out how much their monthly gas bill will be.

This is one of the main reasons why so many households in the United Kingdom are switching to solid fuels.

What exactly are solid fuels?

To burn solid fuels, homeowners often need a high-quality wood-burning stove installed. Solid fuels can therefore be seasoned firewood or kiln-dried firewood. There are also other types of solid fuels, such as artificial coal and manufactured heating blocks, which are often made from compressed sawdust.

All of these are great options; however, whichever company you choose, ensure the wood is dry.
You need to purchase firewood with very low moisture content. Plus, make sure the logs or the product that you are buying are sourced from environmentally friendly sources, such as FSC-certified forests.

Why do your logs offer such good value for money?

Our firewood here at Forestry Firewood Ltd offers excellent value for money, which is why so many of our customers keep coming back year after year. Our customers keep coming back to buy from us because we sell superior-quality firewood, which burns hot and delivers an incredible amount of heat.

Why not offset some of your energy bill with our logs?

If your energy bill is currently very high, you might be thinking, “How can I reduce my gas consumption and my monthly energy bill?

If you think this, you need to consider whether you can have a professionally installed wood-burning stove within your home.
Instead of the central heating running for long periods of time, you can instead use your wood burner to start warming your home.

Why should we purchase our firewood from you?

If you are fed up with high monthly energy bills, you might like the idea of buying solid fuels, such as our logs that are offered at a very competitive price. You can have a large amount of firewood delivered all at once, then replenish your wood store. Customers will then get fantastic value for money from our logs. The reason is that our logs are incredibly dry, meaning that they produce a high level of heat output from your wood burning stove.

Our logs are therefore used to heat many properties across Cardiff, as well as in Newport and the surrounding areas. Our logs are drier than some other companies ‘; thus, our logs offer better value for money, as the heat output is greater.

Why not arrange for a delivery of our logs today?

Its important to know that during the months of November and December are our most busiest periods. Therefore, we would encourage you to call us well in advance, so that we can deliver our firewood to you as soon as possible.

We deliver right throughout the city of Cardiff, we also deliver right throughout Newport as well.

Introduction

As winter is just around the corner, so are those freezing winter nights; it’s natural for people to start thinking of more cost-effective ways to heat their homes.

Kiln-dried firewood offers superior burning qualities and much higher heat output than some other types of logs.

Kiln-dried timber is often slightly more expensive than, say, seasoned firewood, prompting customers to question its benefits.

Within this article, we are going to explain the benefits of this type of firewood.

How are kiln-dried logs produced?

Quite often, the logs are placed in huge industrial kilns, and the wood is then baked just as you would bake a loaf of bread.

The intense heat generated during this kiln-drying process allows us to reduce moisture content significantly.

Most firewood companies aim to get the logs to a moisture content below 20%.

Is it worth paying extra for these types of logs?

There are considerable benefits to purchasing this type of firewood, namely that it burns much better, producing more heat.

We will now explain the many benefits of purchasing kiln-dried logs.

Low-moisture content

We highly recommend avoiding wet wood and purchasing only firewood with a reduced moisture content.

Consistent quality

Businesses that produce kiln-dried firewood have often done so for an extended period of time.

They have therefore often perfected the process of knowing how long to bake the logs and how different varieties of firewood, for example, oak versus ash, need to be baked for varying lengths of time.

Cleaner burning

Just as an inefficient engine produces too much soot and smoke from a tailpipe, so can a wood-burning stove that’s burning wet wood.

The consequences are that logs that are not properly dried result in more soot buildup in the wood-burning stove itself and within the chimney lining.

Too much soot and poor maintenance significantly increase the risk of a chimney fire occurring.

Kiln Dried Oak

Oak is well known for burning for a long time; it’s a very dense type of firewood.

This is therefore one of the main reasons why so many homeowners choose oak: the wood-burning stove needs to be replenished less often than with softwoods such as pine.

Pine burns very quickly; it produces fantastic heat, yet because it burns so quickly, if the wood-burning stove is left for too long, it will simply go out and need re-lighting. This is why people prefer oak: its long burn times make it better suited for homeowners who don’t want to keep getting off the sofa to tend to the stove.

Ash wood

Ash wood is known for burning hot and producing little ash.

Kiln-dried birch logs

Kiln-dried birch logs burns hot and are ideally suited for use in a wood-burning stove.

We discuss the main benefits of kiln-dried firewood compared to seasoned firewood.

Introduction

Here at Forestry Firewood Ltd, we regularly have a vast supply of beech firewood that’s ready to be delivered to our customers.

Within this article, we will explain why beech wood is such a popular type of firewood in the United Kingdom and why it is so effective at heating our customers’ homes.

High heat output

Beech is a very dense type of hardwood; this means that it can, when correctly dried, provide extreme heat when burnt in your wood burning stove. What’s great about choosing a hardwood is that you can heat your room for an extended period. With certain softwoods, this means that the firewood will burn much more quickly when compared to how much longer hardwoods can often burn for.

Therefore, if you want a longer burn time, it’s always a good idea to use denser firewood; such as beech, that way, you won’t have to keep topping up the wood-burning stove as often.

Minimal smoke

Another reason beech is such a popular firewood here in the United Kingdom is that, when correctly dried, it burns very cleanly.

Therefore, many homeowners appreciate the fact that beech, when properly dried, burns very hot, meaning it will minimise creosote buildup in the chimney.

Very easy to split

Many homeowners make kindling themselves once our logs have been delivered.
Therefore, beech is often selected as the firewood that the customer wants delivered, because this type of wood can be split relatively simply using the right axe.

Other types of hardwoods, such as oak, are, in our opinion, much harder to split with an axe.

However, beech wood often has fewer knots, and is generally a type of firewood that’s super simple to split and therefore to make wooden kindling from.

Less soot and tar

Homeowners often prefer to select a type of firewood / logs that has less sap and resin.

For example, certain softwoods sometimes contain a high amount of sap, which, if the wood is not kiln-dried sufficiently, can produce excess soot when burned in your stove.

Therefore, this is one of the reasons why homeowners often select beech wood, as it emits less soot after its been kiln-dried compared to other softwoods.

Do you have beech firewood in stock now?

Here at Forestry Firewood Ltd, we keep in stock a wide range of hardwoods in stock, as well as many quality softwoods.

Our stock is constantly updated with new deliveries arriving regularly.

Please call us, and one of our friendly team members will be able to tell you what timber we have in stock at the moment.

We regularly stock ash and beech and oak firewood, as these types of firewood are very popular in the United Kingdom and in high demand.

How do you ensure that your beech firewood is ready to burn?

All of our firewood, whether its softwood or hardwood, is kiln-dried for an extended period to ensure it offers the customer a consistently high quality timber.

As soon as you see our quality firewood, you will notice slight cracks on the sides, which indicates that the wood has been subjected to intense heat for a sustained period.

This makes the firewood extremely easy to ignite, and many of our customers also make kindling out of our firewood.

Because beech is so easy to split, and because it has been kiln-dried for an extended period, it becomes super simple to ignite.

How long will we have to wait for the delivery of our beech firewood?

This depends on the time of year; our busiest period is typically in the winter months. We would encourage you to ring us as soon as possible, so that we can book you in as

Which areas do you deliver beech firewood to?

We can deliver beech firewood anywhere within the city of Newport and the surrounding areas such as Rogerstone and Bassaleg.

We can also deliver to Cardiff.

Can we order different types of firewood on the same order?

Yes, you most certainly can. We often deliver firewood of various types, including oak, beech, and ash.

Often, our customers prefer to have different types of logs to burn, as each type of firewood burns at a different rate. For instance, ash burns differently from pine.

Is your wood seasoned, or is it kiln-dried?

All our firewood is kiln-dried, and therefore, you have the reassurance that the firewood is nice and dry and ready to burn as soon as it’s delivered.

How much firewood should we order to see us through the winter?

How much firewood/logs are needed for a household to cover the winter?

Introduction

It’s fair to say that here in Great Britain our winters seem long and very cold; this, therefore, begs the question: how much firewood is needed for a household to cover the winter period?

In this article, we will provide you with some food for thought in terms of some of the considerations that you need to make when purchasing firewood from a local supplier.

How many wood-burning stoves do you have? And of what size?

If you plan to use multiple wood-burning stoves, then you will need a larger quantity of firewood.

However, you must consider the size of the actual wood-burning stoves. Some stoves have a small internal burning area, meaning that your firewood supply will last longer.

However, in larger properties, it’s common to have some wood-burning stoves that are quite simply very large. This will have very large internal burning areas within the stove.

To keep these large stoves burning at maximum output, the area within the stove requires more logs and often burns through the firewood more quickly. Then in depends on how efficient your wood-burning stove is; some wood-burning stoves are more efficient and better at producing more heat than others.

For example, when you purchase a more expensive wood-burning stove, the quality of the cast iron and the design are usually better.

Therefore, when shopping for a stove, ensure that you choose a wood-burning stove with good heat efficiency. Good online retailers of wood burning stoves will typically mention this heat efficiency score on their websites.

The type of firewood

Just as a general rule, if you’re purchasing softwood, such as pine, this will burn much faster when compared to hardwoods.

Therefore, your stack of firewood will be depleted much more quickly, if your burning softwood. That’s because softwood is far less dense.

Therefore, talk to your firewood supplier about what types of hardwood they have in stock.

Certain varieties of firewood burn for longer; however, some softwoods, when kept nice and dry they can burn very bright and really offer an intense heat. It’s therefore a balance between whether you want the wood to burn hotter or for longer?

Are you planning on using an open stove?

An open stove is excellent choice, especially at Christmas time, as it creates a pleasant, homely atmosphere.

However, there is a slight problem with burning wood on an open fire, and that is that an open fire is much less efficient when compared to modern cast iron wood burning stoves.

Therefore, if you plan to burn wood in an open fire, we encourage you to purchase more firewood from your supplier.

Find a firewood supplier that delivers in large quantities.

Many customers purchase firewood in small net bags; however, purchasing firewood this way often means that the customer burns through their supply of logs very quickly and then has to keep reordering to replenish there log store over the winter.

However, what we can do here at Forestry Firewood Ltd is we can come to your home and tip a large quantity of loose logs. This offers good value for money, as will be purchasing a large amount of firewood delivered to their house in one go.

Would you like us to deliver logs to your home this winter?

We can deliver quality logs as well as kindling wood to help you get your fire started in a short period of time. We offer to deliver logs all over the city of Newport.

Does it matter if the wood is kiln-dried?

It most definitely matters whether you’re purchasing kiln-dried firewood or not. That is if you buy wood that’s been dried, that is kiln dried, and has very little moisture content, then this wood will burn much hotter.

The firewood will burn hotter and it will normally last longer.

Wet wood, on the other had will just damage your chimney, the stove, and will just produce a large amount of soot.

Yet, I can purchase a greater quantity of wet wood” surely that would offer better value if I dry it myself?

Typically, social media marketplaces, a lot of people will sell firewood, often produced from trees that have just been cut down in their own gardens.

To save money on the removal of those logs, they may actually try to sell the logs cheaply on social media marketplaces.

However, this will be wet wood, which you should not burn. The logs needs to seasoned, or kiln dried, otherwise what happens is that an excessive amount of soot builds up in the chimney when burnt, it then damages the airflow of the stove, it actually clog up the chimney lining, it can also produce an excessive amount of smoke, which will undoubtably annoy the neighbouring homes.

Therefore what is needed is firewood that has been seasoned for a long period.

Therefore, you are left with the option of seasoning the firewood yourself if you buy wet wood.

How long it takes to dry varies depending on the type of firewood that you’ve bought.

We can also deliver throughout Cardiff.

Why not get a large quantity of our logs delivered to your home this winter?

Introduction

When you’ve purchased high-quality firewood, you will want to ensure that you’re keeping it dry and well-ventilated.

In this article, we will provide you with some of our top tips on how to store your kiln-dried firewood correctly.

This is so that you can achieve the best performance from your logs as much as possible.

Buy quality

It doesn’t matter whether we are talking about shoes or cars; it’s essential to seek out the best quality item that you can purchase.

In terms of firewood and logs, this means ensuring you obtain high-quality firewood that is ready to burn.

Our firewood undergoes stringent quality control measures, which means no batch ever gets delivered unless it’s of high quality and has been checked by our moisture metres.

A moisture meter will be placed in the wood to provide an accurate reading of the logs’ moisture content.

If our wood is not dry enough, it gets popped back into the kiln, where we dry it for even longer.

Invest in a good-quality wood store.

The first step is to have a well-constructed wood store built.

Many homeowners create their own wood stores, and there are numerous YouTube videos of people building their own wood stores, which you may find helpful for obtaining ideas when building your own wood store at home.

It’s essential to ensure that the rainwater does not drip onto the front of the logs or leak anywhere within the building.

It’s also necessary to think about airflow and raising the logs well off the floor.

If you’re building your log store yourself, consider how to prevent rain, such as driving rain and rain during storms, from entering the wood store.

You want the wood store to be as dry as possible, and you want it to rise off the floor to avoid water absorption.

Ideally, you want the wood store to be south-facing and to catch as much natural light as possible.

Even on the coldest of days, in the middle of winter, a lot of natural light can still help to keep the logs nice and dry when stored in a well-built wood store.

Consider airflow and build a large wooden store. The reason is that you don’t want to cram your logs into the wood store because you need to stack the logs correctly.

What you want instead is for you to crisscross the logs and stack them so that a lovely, gentle breeze flows through the wood store all the time.

This allows for good ventilation, which is very important when storing logs outside.

The reason is that even if you have built or bought a flawlessly well-made wooden store, the damp air can still seep into the wooden store due to the high humidity in the air in Britain during the winter.

Therefore, by crisscrossing the logs and allowing for ventilation, you enable the wood to dry naturally over time by allowing good air flow.

The direct sunlight will also help with this.

Keep your logs off the grass or damp surface.

What many people do is make the mistake of stacking logs against a fence and throwing a tarpaulin over the logs.

What happens then, if the logs are stacked on the grass, is that the logs will absorb a lot of water, which then causes them to be too wet and you cannot burn them, and it will also mean that the logs will start to rot.

It’s not usual in these circumstances for the logs to start growing fungi as well in the U.K.

This is definitely not what you want; you want good dry logs, so do make sure that when storing logs, they are kept off the floor.

Rotate your logs from time to time

It’s essential to rotate your logs from time to time.

What can happen is that your logs, if they’re not stacked correctly, can start to get wet.

Therefore, part of the logs kept in the log store, for example, might fall over and begin to get damp. To prevent this, rotate the logs, use criss-cross patterns to stack the logs, and keep them in a dry place.

Introduction

We get it, when the sun’s out, it’s warm, everyone’s buying ice-creams and cold beverages, who wants to purchase firewood?

However, now in the middle of summer, and throughout the warmer months, this is the best time to purchase firewood.

In this article, we shall explain the benefits of buying firewood during the summer:

Lower prices

A lot of firewood producers are still busy producing firewood ready for next winter at this time of year.

However, many suppliers also continue to deliver throughout the summer months as well as the winter.

As a result of this, firewood suppliers often offer significant discounts on log prices during this period, when demand is lower.

Now is therefore the time to stock up if you have the available space. For example, you may have a dry garage that you do not use that often.

Therefore, you could stack a garage at the end of your garden with quality logs ready for winter?

Faster deliveries

During the winter months, firewood suppliers in Cardiff and Newport can sometimes quickly run out of stock.

As soon as it turns cold, most firewood supplier often receives hundreds of calls per day. This means that all the work in terms of delivering logs all comes at once, which usually means firewood suppliers can’t provide that quickly.

They therefore can’t replenish their firewood supply fast enough. This is why we encourage you to buy now, during the summer months when firewood businesses typically have a large amount of logs available for purchase.

This also means that during the summer, we can sometimes deliver the same week you call us.

However, during the winter months, most firewood suppliers may have customers wait quite a while for a delivery due to the rise in demand from customers.

This is often due to the sheer number of deliveries that take place, especially in the build-up to the Christmas holidays.

Time to store

Sometimes during the winter months, a customer may not have the time to build or buy a good-quality wood store.

However, now that it’s summertime, you have plenty of time to build a wood store or purchase one.

This allows ample time to correctly stack the logs until they are needed in the winter months.

Firepits

Many people use firewood during the summer as well. Our logs could therefore be used to heat a wood-fired hot tub in Newport or a pizza oven in Cardiff. Or perhaps to toast marshmallows over a fire pit in Barry?

We deliver our quality logs throughout the seasons. No matter if it’s spring, summer, winter, or autumn, our team is out hard at work providing our firewood.

Why not call us today to arrange a delivery?

Introduction

When purchasing firewood, the quality can vary massively. One company may supply logs that are bone-dry and ready to burn, another company may supply damp logs that sometimes even have mould attached!

It’s essential to take your time when choosing a firewood supplier.

The two most important aspects we think customers should consider are whether the logs come from a sustainable managed forest. For example, does the wood come from a forest that is FSC certified?

The next factor is whether the logs have been dried correctly and have a low moisture content.

This can mean the burning performance of the logs can vary massively depending on where you purchase your logs. One company for example may sell logs that will leave very little ash in the wood burning tray, the ash left is then fine. This can often mean that the wood has been burnt hot and correctly.

For another business that sells wet logs, you may be stuck for an extended period trying to ignite the wood. Then, an excessive amount of smoke may emerge from the chimney! The ash left in the wood burning stove can be excessive and the soot can actually damage the stove and the environment.

Therefore, you do have to choose your log suppliers carefully.

In this article, we will discuss some of the firewood certifications available to ensure that you are getting high-quality try logs or purchasing a quality wood burning stove. Also, it’s essential to buy logs from a sustainable source as well.

FSC Forest Stewardship Council

When you see FSC certification on a pack of logs or a log supplier’s website, this means that the company has sourced its logs from a supplier that is committed to responsible forest management.

Being FSC certified means that the company is committed to sustainable forest management.

If the forests from which the timber is sourced are responsibly managed, this means that there will be trees to fell in the future to produce wood or solid fuels again.

HETAS Certification

You may see a HETAS sticker applied to wood-burning stoves as well as fuels. Some customers may not know what this sticker or logo means—having a product that is HETAS-certified means that the product has been produced to work efficiently and to be environmentally friendly.

It is therefore a sign of quality if you are buying, for example, fuels that are HETAS certified.

Woodsure Certified

As we mentioned earlier in this article, purchasing wet wood can be both annoying for customers and harmful for the environment. Damp wood, that’s wood with a high moisture content, simply produces an excessive amount of smoke.

Instead, you want the logs to be as clean-burning as possible.

Therefore, many log suppliers in the United Kingdom hold Woodsure Certification, ensuring that the firewood or biomass fuels are of good quality.

Buy quality

There will always be log suppliers that compete solely on price. However, it’s important to note that if the wood is not correctly dried, it will not produce the heat that the customer would expect from the logs or kindling.

Wet wood can therefore be a total false economy.

However, as this article illustrates, not all firewood is the same. Firewood and logs from suppliers like Forestry Firewood are of exceptionally high quality, having been dried correctly.

This results in a much easier ignition and a hotter burn for the customer.

Call us to arrange delivery.

We don’t just deliver in the winter months; our delivery team also delivers logs during the winter.

It can be perplexing when one load of wood produces plenty of heat while another fails to burn that hot. You might therefore believe that all firewood is the same?

However, nothing could be further from the truth: firewood varies massively in quality.

There are proven techniques that will improve the heat output of your logs. In this article we discuss why proper storage matters, look at the different species available, and explain why you should never burn wet wood.

What causes firewood to burn differently?

If you are scratching your head, wondering why firewood from different suppliers varies so much in heat output, let us explain.

Wood species

You may have heard logs described as a “solid fuel”. While they remain a natural product, they behave just like any other fuel. What is important to remember is that different species possess different energy densities, which is why a hardwood such as oak can burn far longer than a softwood like pine or spruce.

Moisture content

This is often the deciding factor between a roaring fire and a dull, unimpressive burn. Some suppliers do not dry their logs adequately. In the rush to fulfil autumn and winter orders, they may deliver wood that still carries a high moisture content. Wet logs burn poorly, give off excessive smoke and soot, and can damage both your stove and the chimney liner—never mind upsetting the neighbours.

How the wood is cut

Cutting logs into smaller pieces exposes more surface area, making them far easier to dry.

Large, chunky logs that have not been properly seasoned or kiln-dried tend to stay wet and create excessive soot when burnt. When seasoning your own firewood, cut it small logs and stack it so that air can circulate freely.

Tips for maximising the efficiency and heat output of your logs

With the current cost-of-living pressures, everyone wants better value from their firewood. The following guidance will help:

Invest in proper storage

Leaving logs on the grass and covering them with a tarpaulin is inadequate.

The wood will absorb ground moisture and the plastic sheet will trap it and then it will be absorbed by the logs.

A purpose-built log store keeps the wood off the ground and should incorporate slatted sides or gaps for constant airflow.
Stack the logs neatly, leave spaces between them, and ensure the roof overhangs enough to protect against driving rain. Position the store where wind can blow right through it.

Buy kiln-dried logs

Don’t settle for cheap yet damp firewood. Choose a company that provides bone-dry, kiln-dried firewood with a moisture content below 20 %. Such logs ignite quickly, burn hotter, and last longer because you’re not wasting energy evaporating water.

Use a moisture meter
A small handheld meter costs very little and tells you instantly whether a log is ready to burn.
Aim for 20 % moisture or less; anything higher should go back into storage to dry further.

Rotate your stock

First in, first out.
Burn the oldest, driest logs first and keep newer deliveries at the back of the store so they have time to season.
