Introduction

If you’re looking for a new firewood supplier, you are most likely on Google asking the question “firewood near me.

This can mean that you’re presented with a vast number of local log suppliers to choose from.

The sheer number of companies to choose from can therefore be overwhelming. As a highly experienced business supplying quality kiln-dried firewood, we thought it would be a good idea to outline some areas you should consider when choosing a local company.

How dry is the wood?

When selecting a firewood supplier, we recommend that your top consideration is how dry the wood actually is.

If the wood is wet, which is often the case when the tree has just been felled, it can mean the wood takes a very long time to season.

Then there’s kiln-dried firewood: basically, the timber is blasted with intense heat in a massive kiln. Just as you heat your pizza in an oven, so too do firewood suppliers bake kiln-dried firewood.

The purpose of baking or kiln-drying firewood is simple: to reduce its moisture content. To subject the wood to such intense heat that the moisture evaporates and is removed from the wood.

However, some firewood companies do an excellent job of removing moisture from their logs; others do not.
Some companies, on the other hand, do not do a good job, which means the firewood is not kiln-dried or baked long enough.

What, therefore, happens is that the moisture is still within the log, meaning that because of the amount of water saturation, the logs shouldn’t be burnt.

However, if the firewood that has been correctly seasoned or kiln-dried is burnt, it can damage the chimney.

Damage to the chimney, the chimney lining and the stove itself can occur when there’s too much soot and smoke produced from burning wet wood.

Also, wet wood, or wood that hasn’t been seasoned, is simply a total waste of time.

It’s a waste of time, simply because it will create a dull burn, which means nowhere near the same amount of heat will be emitted from the stove if kiln-dried firewood were used instead.

What’s the delivery charge to deliver the firewood?

Do check with the log supplier to confirm their delivery charge. Some companies offer free delivery included in the cost of the logs, while others offer cheap firewood, yet the delivery charge can be pretty high.

How long have you got to wait for the delivery of the logs?

For some companies, during, say, the frigid weeks in December, well, there could be over a month’s wait for delivery of firewood.
Therefore, do check with the log supplier to confirm when they can deliver before you send payment for the “buy it now” button on their website.

The reason is that the follow-up e-mail could mean the next delivery could be a long way off.

What type of firewood is going to be delivered- will be Ash, Oak or Beech?

Also, consider the firewood you’re purchasing. Are you buying hardwood or softwood? We recommend the best types of firewood are kiln-dried ash, oak and beech.

Does the company use a moisture meter to check the timber’s moisture levels before it’s delivered?

If logs have been stored outside for an extended period, they can reabsorb moisture. For example, logs that have been put in the kiln-dried oven could be ready to burn straightaway.

However, if those same logs have been stored outside, let’s say for a few months when the weather has been very wet, the timber can reabsorb that moisture.

Therefore, your reputable firewood suppliers should conduct a moisture check on the firewood before delivery.

This means sampling each timber delivery to ensure the moisture level is low enough for the wood to be ready to burn.
